What's Going On?
January 2009
I like to find some special things in each month. The birthstone for January is the garnet, which is one of my favorites, even though my birthday isn't in January. I just love the color, which is usually like the color of Kilroy's brick wall (see above).
January 1 is New Years Day.
January 26th is Chinese New Year. This year is the year
of
There are many other important days in January, especially
this year: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is January 19th, and it is followed
by Inauguration Day on January 20th.
The
first Superball Game was played on January 15, 1967 ; Green Bay (35) defeated
Kansas City (10)
The Eskimo Pie was patented on January 24, 1922
Our January Birthday Gang has lots of impressive company. Besides Dr. King, Jr. they share their birth month with several historic figures : Ben Franklin, Betsy Ross, Sir Isaac Newton, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Jackie Robinson. Also born in January were Elvis Presley, Lewis Braille, Rubber Ducky & Ernie from Sesame Street, and Sherlock Holmes.
This is the time to eat black eyed peas, and make resolutions for the coming year. Darn! I didn't do either one. How about you?

We are fortunate to have two Santas in our class. Most of us know that Bill Swank has been Santa at Balboa Park for several years, as well as at Walter Andersen's Nursery. Last year Bill Lansville became the Santa at the Wal Mart in Barstow, California. He loved it, so he did it again this year. Way to go Bills.
Here are a couple of pictures of Santa Swank at Balboa Park

Next Breakfast, February 7, 2009
9 A.M.
5955 Balboa Ave. (at Mt. Alifan/Mt. Abernathy)
We had a big group here for the breakfast Saturday, even though it was a gray, rainy, crawl-back-into-bed-and-cover-your-head kind of day. There were 24 of us there! And we had to be on good behavior, because we had two Santas there. They were disguised as human beings, but we knew who they were!
The brave souls that came out for a morning of breakfast and conversation were:
Class of 1956: Patsy Lilley; Betty Minga Brown; Raymond A. Hacecky; LuAnn Easterly Giegler & husband, Don (IL-1954)
Class of 1958: Marie Gilmour Davila & husband, Bob (TX-1955); Pat DeFore Barr; Sheila Mura; Orpha Higley; Pam Priest Lollis & Wayne Lollis; Walter Andersen; Judi Michael Shacklett & husband, John; Bill Lansville; Aline Minga Brown & husband, Don (OK-1954); Bill Swank & wife, Jeri Lynne Swank
Class of 1959: Christiana Hughes Wagner; Rosemary Pleger Jackson; Bill Curtis & wife, Mary (1962)
