What's Going On?
August 2009
"August"= marked by majestic dignity or grandeur
The Senate (Roman that is) named August for Augustus Caesar. At that time, the months (not counting February) alternated between 30 and 31 days. Since there were 31 days in Julius Caesar's month, July, it was decided that the month of August should have 31 days also, preventing anyone from claiming that Emperor Augustus had an inferior month.
August 8 is "Sneak some zucchini onto your neighbors porch night".
August 21 is "National Senior Citizens' Day"
In his Presidential Proclamation (August 19, 1988), President Ronald Reagan said: "For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older."
I just thought that was pretty cool.

Janet McDonald Walz was visiting San Diego a few weeks ago:
I was in town a couple weeks ago. Our two youngest daughters,
Deborah and Julie had a Poker/Bunco
Fundraiser for their third 60 Mile 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk for this
coming November 2009. It is always a fun
weekend. Although I should be walking with them, I babysit their
children and cheer them on at different points
of their walk.

9 A.M.
5955 Balboa Ave. (at Mt. Alifan/Mt. Abernathy)
We had the biggest group for breakfast this morning since the morning of the reunion--31 classmates. What a great crowd. Poor Thelma was run off her feet. She is now into "cup clanking" to ask for order so she can ask for orders.

Medical Updates
Carol Evans Green
We have word from Carol Evans Green. If you remember, she broke her leg on July 3. She wrote me on Facebook Monday, Aug. 3rd: "Marie - I went to the Taroga website today. Thanks for your good wishes. I had my cast removed today, and now have a walking boot. Much better" Good for you Carol; keep up the good work. Sounds like you are doing ok.

"This is my new air cast-comes off at night, and I can step on it. Looks like part of a space suit."

Jim Yerkey
Jim Yerkey is back in the hospital. A few months ago he went in for a leg amputation due to diabetes. He was doing well, but suddenly developed a small sore on his other foot. He should be having surgery shortly -probably Thursday, Aug.6. He also had to have dialysis a couple of times, but says he is feeling ok, and the kidneys are improving. We sure hope so. Please keep Jim in your thoughts and prayers. He is at the Palomar Pomerado Hospital in Escandido.

Betty Waddell Cerney
Betty is still hanging in there. She just got her kitchen remodeled, and then entertained a house-load of guest shortly after that. She is still doing her chemo once a week, and hopefully it is doing its job. When I hear from her again I will let you know, but meantime keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
