What's Going On?
June 2010

I could be singing "June is Bustin' Out All Over", but I never really liked that song. Anyway, it is pretty dreary today here in San Diego, and my singing wouldn't improve anything. There is a lot to celebrate in June though...
| June 6, 1944: D-Day. The day of the
allied invasion of Normandy. The date chosen depended on the
weather and the phase of the moon (they needed light, and deep water). The weather was generally bad the few days before the 6th, in fact bad enough that the Germans were sure that it was unsuitable for an invasion. Field Marshal Rommel took a few days off to celebrate his wife's birthday, and many senior officers were away for the weekend when the allies attacked. June 12, 1939: The National Baseball hall of Fame opened in Cooperstown, NY June 14, 1885: A school teacher in Wisconsin had the idea of celebrating the FLAG BIRTHDAY on the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of the Stars & Stripes as the American Flag. Many years later, in 1949, President Harry S. Truman designated June 14 as National Flag Day. June 20, 2010: Father's Day June 21, 2010: The Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, the day the sun is the farthest north. Also there is a myth that you can stand a raw egg on end on that day, but apparently if you are skilled enough to do it on that day, you can do it on any day. |

| June has a choice of three birthstones: the pearl,
the moonstone and alexandrite. I found a site with lots of interesting birthdays, and I will put some of them down near the bottom of the page along with our own interesting birthdays. |

Do you remember this man?
He is former MBHS math and physical education teacher, Don Donnelly. I got a message from his son, Michael that Don Donnelly is 81 years old now, alive and well, here in San Diego.
After MBHS he taught at several other San Diego high schools. He also served for a number of years on the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing in Sacramento. His former wife passed away in 1991. He is now Dr. Donnelly (PHD) as is his wife, Mary. Here is the whole family at the UCSB graduation ceremony of Michael's daughter, (Dr. Don's granddaughter)

Dr. Donnelly (81, really!); mother-in-law, Helen Jang; granddaughter, Cara; daughter-in-law, Laureen (Michael's wife); granddaughter, Caitlin; son, Michael, and Dr. Donnelly's wife, Mary

Well, as promised up above, here are some interesting birthdays, followed by some more interesting birthdays of our fellow classmates.
| Marilyn Monroe was born on June 1,
1926 and would be 84 if she had lived. Dr. Ruth Westheimer
was born on the 4th in 1928 and is 82. So if MM had lived
she would be 2 years older than Dr. Ruth. If you were born on June 28 you share a birthday with King Henry the VIII, who was born on that date in 1491. Some of you may have been born on the same day as some famous people: Tom Jones was born on June 7, 1940; Nancy Sinatra on June 8; Dick Vitale (TV sports commentator & former basketball coach) on June 9; and Mariette Hartley on June 21, all in 1940. For some of us born in 1941, there was Stacy Keach and Charlie Watts (drummer) born on the 2nd ; on the 22nd of June 1941, Ed Bradley was born. |
|
| Lena Horne, who passed away May 9,
2010, was born on June 30, 1917 and would have been 93 on her birthday
this year. Click on the link above to see more famous birthdays. There is a camera to the left of each name that is a link to a page of information. (You may want to know all about Dr. Ruth) , and clicking on a name on the list will show a small picture and brief description of the person. |
